The Cook Who Has Traveled Thousands of Miles (万里を駆ける料理人 Banri o Kakeru Ryōrinin) is the sixteenth episode of the first season of Shokugeki no Soma and is the sixteenth episode overall.
Synopsis[]
Jōichirō and Sōma have their 490th cooking battle in the Polar Star Dormitory’s kitchen.
Plot[]
At the Nakiri mansion, Erina wakes up and looks at the photo of Jōichirō. Back at the Polar Star Dormitory, Jōichirō wants to have a cooking challenge with Sōma to see how much he has grown, so Sōma gladly accepts. Last night, Satoshi is hearing Jōichirō about being the one who taught Sōma to cook, saying he must stand out from all the elites, while the rest of the Polar Star Dormitory residents are celebrating. Satoshi mentions to Jōichirō that he had a face-off with Sōma, knowing that he would stir things up.
Back in the present, before they start the match, Jōichirō asks a judge what dish to eat who turns out to be Fumio. Satoshi appears out of nowhere, scaring Fumio, who was on his way doing fieldwork. Looking for a third judge, Megumi appears to open the fridge. However, Sōma sees that Megumi didn't get enough sleep due to thinking about the camp and admits being surprised that she made it. Sōma reminds Megumi that it's already over, so she can get a good night's rest. Coming up with an idea, Fumio makes Megumi the third judge. For the theme, Fumio tells Sōma and Jōichirō to make a dish that will get herself, Satoshi, and Megumi (who is still sleepy) ready to start the day. She reminds them that they can use anything in the kitchen, and they begin at one hour.
After waking up, Megumi sees Sōma and Jōichirō facing each other, and she wants to know why. Megumi questions Sōma for facing his father, and Sōma responds that it is always like this when he was in 6th grade. When Megumi asks Sōma if he won, he doesn't remember. However, Jōichirō knows he's bluffing and says Sōma is at 500 losses. In response, Sōma retorts that it's 489. As Fumio is watching, she remembers Jōichirō asking her to be the judge for the cooking match, which she accepts. Megumi sees Sōma using an apple and how confident he is to face Jōichirō, although he's a former second seat of the Elite Ten. Satoshi understands that Sōma never backs down from a challenge and is trying to surpass Jōichirō even after 489 losses. When Sōma finishes his dish, it is presented to be an Apple Risotto. When Fumio, Satoshi, and Megumi taste it, they can feel the crispiness, and it's also good with pepper. Satoshi realizes that it becomes crispy instead of mushed, and Sōma reveals to have used apple juice. Next is Jōichirō's turn to bring his dish.
While Megumi wants to know what dish Jōichirō made besides the ones from last night, Satoshi is honored to witness it, and Fumio comments him for making surprising dishes. When Jōichirō shows the judges his dish, it's revealed to be a Special Rich Ramen, much to Sōma and their surprise. Fumio scolds Jōichirō for pursuing the element of surprise too far, which results in his defeats at Shokugekis, and he hasn't changed at all. However, Megumi smells the broth to be light and mellow. When the judges taste the ramen, it's extremely good. Jōichirō has added ebi-imo taro and tempeh to the ramen, and the broth is actually a vegetarian broth from shiitake mushrooms.
Jōichirō's ultimately declared the victor of his and son's latest cooking battle. Fumio, Satoshi and Megumi assure Sōma that his dish was delicious, with Fumio also commending both him and his father for using the element of surprise in their dishes -- however, they also felt that Sōma's dish was a bit lackluster in comparison to what his father made. Sōma acknowledges that they may have a point, realizing that he designed his dish to minimize the possibility of not meeting the judges' individual needs while his father maximized their satisfaction. Jōichirō acknowledges that his son has definitely grown in his cooking abilities since arriving at Tōtsuki -- he tells his son that as long as he's at the school, he won't lose to anyone but him. Fumio sees them communicating through cooking. However, Jōichirō reminds Sōma of his 490th loss, which angers him. So they mark it in their journals, much to Megumi and Fumio's surprise. After seeing how much he kept facing his father, Megumi tells Sōma that she'll keep trying. As they went upstairs and talk about how amazing Jōichirō is, Sōma wants to reach the top, and he tells Megumi that both of them will aim for the Elite Ten. Outside, Fumio tells Jōichirō to give Sōma more advice before leaving, but he responds that Sōma will figure it out and bids her farewell. Erina is in the car with Hisako who is instructing her to taste a new menu. Suddenly, Erina feels Jōichirō's presence and stops the car to see him, but he has already left.
The Polar Star Dormitory residents are informed by Fumio that Jōichirō has left. Ryōko and Yūki are saddened by hearing this, but also shocked when Megumi mentions that Sōma and Jōichirō had a cooking match. Fumio gives Sōma a message from his father: "Air out the restaurant once in a while", meaning he has to visit Restaurant Yukihira during the holiday. At the Sumediredōri Shopping District, Mayumi is walking and looks at Restaurant Yukihira. Elsewhere, Yūya is wondering what will happen to the shopping district since there are no customers.
