The Man Who was Called an "Asura" (『修羅』と呼ばれた男 Syura to yobareta otoko) is the fifteenth episode of the first season of Shokugeki no Soma and is the fifteenth episode overall.
Synopsis
The training camp regiment is finally over, as the students get an unexpected visitor back at Polar Star Dormitory.
Plot
At the airport, Jōichirō has returned to Japan. In the training camp, Gin announces for the students to enjoy the banquet prepared by the Alumni, much to their excitement. As the students are heading to the buses, the Polar Star Dormitory residents are relieved that it's over as Shun sees that they made it, despite admitting how difficult it was. Zenji reminds them not to enter his room last night, but Daigo and Shōji point out he doesn't seem to mind joining them, remembering that he played the card game too.
When Sōma sees Kojirō leaving, he and Megumi approach him. Noticing his suitcase, Megumi questions Kojirō if he's going back to France, and he confirms that he is, not wanting to keep his restaurant closed. Since he has already won the Pluspol award, Kojirō has decided that his goal is to make SHINO'S the number one restaurant in Paris, with a three-star rating from Michelin. Sōma and Megumi are surprised to hear this since no Japanese chef in France has ever won that. Kojirō is about to tell Sōma and Megumi something; however, they're interrupted by Hinako as she's with Fuyumi, Donato, and Hitoshi. Hinako tells Kojirō not to steal a march on them, but he doesn't know what she's talking about. While Fuyumi approaches Sōma and asks if he's interested in Italian cooking, Hitoshi, Hinako, and Donato are fighting over Megumi. When Gin appears, alongside Hiromi, Megumi wants to know what's going on as Hinako is hugging her. In response, Gin explains that they're sizing Sōma and Megumi up, which means the camp also serves as a recruiting ground to offer students the position to consider after graduation. Hiromi points out that the Alumni close their restaurants or let their sous chefs take charge, so they can come there to recruit future staff. As Kojirō has Hinako tied up and her mouth covered in tape, Hiromi admits finding promising chefs isn't easy. After hearing it, Yūki doubts Megumi to realize what it means to get recruited by the Alumni, much to the Polar Star Dormitory residents' agreement. When Hiromi offers Sōma to join them in Tōtsuki Resort, he appreciates it, but Sōma declines since he already has Restaurant Yukihira. He also wants his father to recognize his skills one day and deem him worthy to be the next owner of the restaurant.
As the Alumni watches Sōma and Megumi leave, Hinako (who has removed the tape from her mouth while still tied up) asks Kojirō if he's going to pursue a three-star rating and lets her help him, and he confirms that he could hire her as his servant. As Gin sees Sōma leaving, he gets a familiar feeling of him from Jōichirō. Hiromi asks Gin if there's anything wrong, but Gin says it's nothing. Although the students are inside the buses, Sōma went back to the hotel to get his bandana, and Erina has also left something behind and tells Hisako that she'll take the car instead. Sōma has retrieved his bandana, but he enters the wrong bus filled with the elders. Tokuzo recognizes him making the souffle omelet, and Sōma apologizes to him for wasting many of his eggs. In response, Tokuzo will forgive Sōma if he'll give his eggs preference in his restaurant, so Sōma agrees. Kokuze hopes for Sōma to use his beans and the same goes for Kyusaku's cheese. Furthermore, the rest of the elders offer him items, such as rice crackers and cough drops. As Sōma thanks them, he quickly realizes he has to go back with the students, but it's already too late as the buses have already left. Sōma encounters Erina who has her bag with her, and a woman has made arrangements for the car to pick up Erina and sees Sōma has also missed the bus.
Sōma is in the car with Erina as they're heading to Tōtsuki Academy. He asks if she wants rice crackers or cough drops, but Erina says no. Sōma reminds her about wanting to enjoy seeing him fail, but he survived, which irritates Erina. Erina admits to Sōma that he did well, but she doubts that he'll be selected for the elections. Sōma doesn't know about it, so Erina explains that it's called the Autumn Elections, a gourmet festival where students compete to exercise their skills. She also mentions the selection committee members at the camp, which causes Sōma to grow excited from remembering them, much to Erina's objection to him getting selected. Having a flashback of Sōma saying he learned from experiencing failure, Erina dismisses it as a loser's excuse to cover up his failure. She reminds him that failure is not an option because perfection can only be served at the table as a way to achieve a gourmet experience just like "his" cooking. Sōma questions Erina for missing the bus, but she does not need to tell him. Getting into an awkward situation, Sōma decides to sleep. Remembering the hotel to retrieve something, Erina has found it, which turns out to be a book that contains a photo of Jōichirō and herself when she was little. Elsewhere, Gin discovers that Sōma is Jōichirō's son, and there's a photo of them together when they were students at the academy.
In the Polar Star Dormitory, Fumio's cleaning, and a visitor appears who turns out to be Jōichirō. At sunset, the residents return to the dormitory, much to Isshiki's relief. Fumio introduces them to Jōichirō, who's cooking. When Jōichirō wants Sōma to help him, he obliges, but Sōma abruptly questions him for getting inside. The residents, except Isshiki, are shocked when Fumio reveals that Jōchirō's a former student at Tōtsuki -- not only that, but he was also a resident of the Polar Star Dormitory and was even a member of the Elite Ten Council (specifically as the second seat). But then Fumio becomes shocked alongside the other students (minus Isshiki) when they learn that Jōichirō and Sōma are father-and-son, but Isshiki is the only one who understood. Upon hearing much of his father, it becomes too much for Sōma. Isshiki introduces himself to Jōichirō as a current member of the Elite Ten Council (specifically as the seventh seat) when hearing about his reputation, and the residents are surprised that Jōichirō is not even bothered by Isshiki's sudden appearance. Sōma explains to everyone that he only knows his father working overseas, remembering the phone calls in foreign languages and the pictures of Jōichirō with foreigners he found. Finally, Jōichirō prepares the food for the Polar Star Dormitory residents as a celebration. Megumi, Ryōko, and Yūki take a bite of Jōichiro, and it's delicious. When Megumi asks what paste is it from the lamb, Jōichirō answers that it's harissa, a hot pepper spice from North Africa, and it's added with parsley and garam masala. Daigo asks Jōichirō about the dish he's holding, and he says it's Zuppa Di Pesce, a Ligurian seafood soup with stoccafisco. Shōji and Zenji also ask Jōichirō what the other dishes are before he tells them. Megumi, Ryōko, and Yūki admire Jōichiro, and they wonder if Sōma would grow up to have the same appeal as they stare at him. Isshiki is also delighted by the taste of Jōichirō's food. Zenji eats one of Jōichiro's failures, which is revealed to be a snake dish that Jōichirō made last month ago, much to Sōma's compliment over the dish's disgusting taste. Fumio points out Jōichirō being called "The Demon", and she sees that he has changed. When Fumio reminds Jōichirō to let Gin try some of his cooking someday, Sōma is surprised.
Fumio shows the Polar Star Dormitory residents a photo of Jōichirō and Gin from when they were students at the school (specifically from their second year) She tells them that both of them were the core as the first and second seats of the Elite Ten Council since Polar Star Dormitory entered a golden age. When Fumio questions Jōichirō if he wrote a letter every year that Gin does, he answers that he sometimes does, but she is skeptical of him due to wondering in and off. This causes Ryōko and Yūki to view Jōchirō as a stray cat and Gin as a loyal dog. Isshiki describes him as a legendary graduate but, much to the surprise of him and the other students, Jōichirō admits that he never actually graduated from the school. Yūki and Ryōko question him on this despite all of his accomplishments from when he was a student, Jōichirō simply says that a lot of stuff happened while Sōma is listening.
While everyone is asleep, Sōma and Jōichirō are cleaning up the kitchen. Jōichirō asks Sōma if Gin is doing well, and Sōma responds that he is. When Sōma asks Jōichirō about what Polar Star Dormitory like back when he and Gin were students, he responds that it was fun, and Jōichirō tells Sōma that everyone worked to perfect their cooking. As they have finished cleaning the kitchen, Sōma asks Jōchirō if he can sleep in his room, which Jōchirō obliges. However, when he notices Sōma's room number is 303, Jōichirō tells Sōma there's a scorch mark from a pot on the floor that used to be his room, so he's heading to an empty room. In his room, Sōma finds the mark on the floor and thinks about his father before going to bed. In the morning, Jōichirō wakes up Sōma and tells him to join him in the kitchen. While wondering why Jōichirō came back to Japan, Sōma brings his equipment to the kitchen, and he realizes that Jōichirō wants to have a cooking contest with him to see how much he has grown.
