—Gin Dojima, regarding the following morning’s task

The Eggs Before Dawn (夜明け前の卵たち Yoake mae no tamago tachi) is the thirteenth episode of the first episode of Shokugeki no Soma and is the thirteenth episode overall.

Synopsis[]

It is currently the third day of the training camp, and the students are given a new task to complete.

Plot[]

At the Polar Star Dormitory, Satoshi is overjoyed to see the rest of his fellow residents have survived the camp. However, He is shocked to see them changed: Sōma being buffed, Megumi, Ryōko, Yūki, Daigo, and Shōji as delinquents, and Shun appears scruffed. Satoshi asks where Zenji is, so Shun lends him his glasses, implying that he did not survive. Horrified, Satoshi calls out his out his name out of despair while he's at the sky as an angel. He wakes up from a bad dream, hoping the rest of the Polar Star Dormitory residents are okay. At the camp, the students are cooking, and Megumi has passed. While Sōma is witnessing her, he focuses on improving his skill.

As they're heading their way, Erina and Hisako meet a girl, along with her companion. She tells Erina to relieve herself of the notion to stay the queen bee forever, and Erina thanks her and keeps that in mind as she and Hisako keep walking. As the Polar Star Dormitory residents are heading to their rooms, Yuki wants to pass out, but Ryōko reminds her that they only have 2 days left. Zenji is using a cane due to being exhausted. Suddenly, when Ryōko doesn't see any time listed for lights out in the training guide, she shows it to Shun, and he agrees as Ryōko believes they have it left off by mistake. They hear Gin announcing that one hour from now, at 10 o'clock, the students will assemble in the banquet hall in their uniforms, which causes Zenji to pass out.

When everyone is in the banquet hall, Sōma suddenly hears Takumi calling him out as he and Ikumi approach. While Ikumi tells Sōma not to pull off stunts like challenging an alumnus to a Shokugeki, Takumi questions him for risking to leave Tōtsuki without settling a score with him. However, the two of them glare at each other as they ask one another for who they are. When Sōma asks Takumi and Ikumi how they know about the Shokugeki that he and Megumi had with Kojirō, both of them exclaim that everyone talks about it. In a pause for a moment, Takumi and Ikumi believe Sōma won, but he confirms that he lost. As Erina appears, Gin starts explaining to the students that tomorrow's task is to make a new breakfast menu for the guests at Tōtsuki Resort. Breakfast is the face of the hotel because it is an important meal for the guests' day, so he wants the students to suggest an innovative dish to make a vibrant contribution. Therefore, the main ingredient will be eggs. The cuisine genre will not be restricted, but the dish must be in a servable buffet style. Finally, the judging will start at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. Gin tells the students to be ready for tasting. When Yūki believes that she hears Gin saying it'll be at 6 o'clock tomorrow evening, Shun corrects her by saying it'll definitely be in the morning, much to her and Zenji's objection. Gin reminds them to spend their time freely until morning by testing recipes in the kitchen facilities or resting in their rooms. So he'll see the students again in the morning as he dismissed them, much to their horror. Takumi sees the challenge as worth competing over. He tells Sōma that he'll deliver up an ultimate breakfast of an Italian egg dish. When Sōma asks what it is, Isami begins explaining to him about the ingredients, but Takumi tells him not to spill the beans before Isami drags him away.

Sōma approaches Erina and reminds her about his transfer exam that also featured eggs, which surprises her as she remembers. She advises him not to make a low-class dish like the last time if he wants to avoid embarrassment in front of the judges. However, Sōma points out to Erina that she was eating it like she enjoyed the taste, much to her complaint by saying it was disgusting. Hisako approaches Erina and informs her that she has secured the kitchen. Before she leaves with Hisako, Erina says good luck to Sōma to wrack his nonexistent brains over tomorrow. Megumi asks Yūki and Zenji if they're okay while they're on their knees. As a result, Yūki ultimately accepts the task, and she gets Zenji to stand up as the rest of the Polar Star Dormitory are going to their rooms where they'll get ready.

Gin discusses the task with Roland and Hitoshi. In the kitchen, the students are testing their egg dishes, Shun remarks to Ryōko about how punishing the assignment is, to which she agrees to the point that they can't go to sleep early unless they have confidence in their work. Erina tells Hisako that she'll go to bed and asks if she's continuing to test recipes, and Hisako confirms that she does and is halfway done. Hisako thinks Erina is impressive as pressure doesn't exist in her world, which is worthy of admiration. Before she leaves, Erina reminds Hisako that they'll play sevens, and she says that the old maid game from yesterday was not exactly her best feeling, and Hisako thinks Erina is determined to be the victor. In her thoughts, as she walks to her room, Erina will reject Sōma's worth with her cooking and shows him what an egg dish worthy of Tōtsuki is made of.

Back in the kitchen, Sōma thinks about the buffet as the all-you-can-eat place as he doesn't about what breakfasts at luxury hotels look like. Nevertheless, he starts cooking dashimaki eggs and scrambled eggs. As Sōma tastes them, they're delicious, but it won't be enough. He remembers asking his father about the new menu when he was little. Jōichirō tells Sōma that customers want dishes they expect from a diner and making them that are way out there won't do anything good. Sōma can't make a dish that is different just for the sake of being different, so he has to make a classic egg dish that's worthy of being served in a luxurious hotel. He has a stroke of inspiration to add an element of surprise to the dish. Takumi has made a breakfast that's a culmination of the Aldini's expertise for Sōma to see, but Isami tells him to go to sleep if he's done. Megumi still hasn't decided on a menu, but after remembering Sōma and Gin's words, she decides what to make.

As the rest of the Polar Star Dormitory residents and Ikumi are cooking, Sōma gets a clear mind of his image of what to make, suddenly, a girl appears to him, which surprises Sōma. He asks who she is, but the girl remarks to Sōma that he'll make quite a good dish, which Sōma thanks her for as he notices her white skin and hair. She tells Sōma that tomorrow morning will be quite a show and says good evening to him. However, the girl bumps into her companion. As she tells her companion not to stand there and get out of the way, he points out that she told him there, but the girl also tells him to only do that when she's trying to intimate someone. The girl reminds her companion that he's intimidated in a good way when he's staying behind her. As she notices, the girl asks her companion where his balls are, but he has forgotten them somewhere, much to her disbelief as they're good for intimating people and calls him a klutz. As Sōma watches, the girl apologizes to him. When she asks Sōma what they're talking about, he says they're not really talking at all. He asks the girl if she knows what to make, and she confirms that she does and wishes him luck with his recipe testing before she and her companion leaves. Despite hearing the rumors, the girl doesn't think there's anything special about Sōma, and she believes he wants to fail the test by making that kind of egg dish.

In the morning, Sōma is surprised by the large size of Hall A. He also sees Megumi writing the character for 'person' on her hand and Takumi, who is shouting at Sōma that he'll win for sure. However, he can't hear him due to being too far away. Coincidentally, Sōma and Erina are next to each other, much to her surprise. He starts to talk about his first time seeing her cook. Seeing as an opportunity to show him her superiority, Erina sarcastically tells Sōma to feel free to savor the gap between his and her cooking. However, he mistakenly believes that they should do a taste comparison, and he obliges when the test is over, much to Erina's frustration. Furthermore, Sōma tells her to do their best. Erina questions him about planning to make a soufflé, so Sōma confirms that it will be a Mini Soufflé Omelet, leaving her in awe. When he asks her what's wrong, Erina says it's nothing, and she leaves. Gin explains the conditions to the students for passing the test: First, he'll introduce the judges who grow and produce ingredients for Tōtsuke Resort Hotels. Suddenly, many people have arrived. The judges, Tokuzō, Kōsuke, and Kyūsaku have arrived. Moreover, Tōtsuki Resort's cooking and service staff, alongside Tokihiko Sakuma and Hirohime Sena, will also join the judging team, much to the students' surprise. Gin continues to explain the two judging criteria: One is whether the students' dishes present an innovation worthy of acknowledgment by professional producers and staff, and the other is to prepare and serve more than 200 servings in 2 hours. Finally, those who fulfill those two judging criteria will pass the test.

A couple of female service staff workers are impressed with Takumi's Insalata Frittata after taking a bite. When the elderly judges approach Megumi to taste her Breakfast Oden, they are intrigued, and Kyūsaku asks her to marry his grandson, much to Megumi's shock. In Hall E, Hirohime gets a bite from Ikumi's Petit Size Loco Moco Don, and he finds it delicious. Suddenly, Ikumi is encountered by a girl who recognizes her as one of Erina's lackeys before deciding she is not worthy of her, much to Ikumi's anger. The girl apologizes to her before leaving to serve her Three Forms of Egg Dishes, but no one is near her booth. Back in Hall A, Erina amazes guests, staff members, and Tokihiko with her Eggs Benedict, with everyone astonished by the taste after taking a bite. Erina has finished 200 servings, while Takumi is right behind her, and Megumi is halfway done. Both Takumi and Megumi wonder how Sōma is faring. Unfortunately, Sōma only has fewer than 10 servings completed.
