The Magician that Came from the East (東から来た魔術師 Higashi kara kita majutsushi) is the eleventh episode of the first season of Shokugeki no Soma and is the eleventh episode overall.
Synopsis[]
Sōma challenges Kojirō to a Shokugeki to decide Megumi's fate.
Plot[]
As the episode continues where Kojirō expels Megumi, Sōma challenges him to a Shokugeki to rescind her expulsion, which leaves the other students in shock. However, Kojirō has no intention of accepting Sōma's challenge, but Gin appears alongside Hinako, telling Kojirō that he seems to have an interesting situation.
Hinako is impressed after tasting Megumi’s dish and complains to Kojirō for not passing her. As she goes further in irritating him, Kojirō grabs Hinako by the head and tells her to be quiet, which causes her to apologize to him before he lets go of her. Kojirō discusses with Gin about being given full discretion for the task, to which Gin agrees. However, Gin remarks that Megumi tried to deal with the situation at hand and asks Kojirō if he thinks her courage earns a certain degree of consideration. However, while he doesn't think it matters, Hinako argues against his decision, which Gin puts as a tie vote that angers Kojirō. To settle this, Gin will start an unofficial Shokugeki, but it will not interfere with the camp schedule. When the other tasks for today are complete, Sōma and Megumi will face Kojirō. Kojirō starts to question Gin why he has to participate, but Gin forces him to accept. Consequently, Kojirō undertakes Sōma's challenge and will rescind Megumi’s expulsion if he wins, but he'll be expelled alongside her if he loses. Gin reminds them to come to an unused kitchen for the training camp afterward.
As they're walking, Sōma tells Megumi to hang in there and make it through the session. When he turns around, Sōma sees Megumi glaring at him while crying. She shouts at him for being stupid and asks how could he make a challenge. Megumi confirms to Sōma that he passed and should let it go, and she gets lower to the ground, letting her tears out. Sōma brings up the dialect that Megumi sometimes lets out, much to her embarrassment. He gets her to stand up because they'll be late for the session. Megumi tells Sōma that he always helps her out, and she is now dragged into a mess. She doesn't know how to make it up to him, but Sōma says it's his choice and tells Megumi not to apologize. He explains his reason for challenging Kojirō is that she is not meant to drop out.
At the campsite, Yūki checks if Megumi is in the room, but she's not there. Ryōko calls her, but Megumi is not responding. Zenji worries that she and Sōma have failed, but Shun confirms that their names are not on the list of those who failed. As the Polar Star Dormitory residents wonder where Sōma and Megumi are, Yūki brings out the time they have managed to get themselves into a Shokugeki over Don RS before, but Ryōko points out that it was Sōma. As they realize this, the Polar Star Dormitory residents express a bad feeling.
Sōma and Megumi went to the basement with Gin to challenge Kojirō. However, Fuyumi, Donato, Hitoshi, and Hinako (who's tied in a chair with a sign on her saying she's just a spectator) are also present. Megumi is surprised to see the alumni as Gin has asked them to be the judges (except Hinako who is biased towards her). When Donato wonders what would Roland do if he finds out, Hitoshi confirms that he'll chew off, and Fuyumi will run and says it's Kojirō's fault, much to Kojirō's chagrin as he can hear her. Gin explains that there are only vegetables for a dish to make and the time limit is 2 hours. Megumi is in her thoughts about being the reason for the Shokugeki, and she can't let Sōma get expelled for it. When she's going to give her best, Gin suddenly makes her the lead chef to decide on the dish on her own and Sōma the supporting chef, much to the duo's shock.
As he's about to start the match, Sōma interrupts and asks Gin why would he make that condition since he's the one who issued a challenge. Gin explains to Sōma that Megumi will still be his tagalong and get knocked out because, at Tōtsuki, everyone must demonstrate, everyone must demonstrate their worth through their own skills. While Megumi feels too pressured to get the ingredients, Kojirō begins to make a dish and insults Sōma by saying he must be in despair because fate is on her skills. Feeling chagrined about it, Hinako asks Fuyumi and Donato what they just heard from his rude remarks, Fuyumi confirms that Kojirō has a bad attitude, and Donato points out that this is why his relationships never last. Angered, Kojirō tells them to be quiet, but he asks Hinako how did she slip through the ropes as he just notices her being untied. As Hinako tells her to not lose, Megumi tries to calm herself down, but she still shivers in fear. Sōma starts to worry, but Gin stops him, saying he's just an under-chef. He warns Sōma that if he can't trust Megumi’s cooking, he must leave the match. However, Sōma refuses to leave because no chef runs away from the kitchen. Sōma brings Megumi’s hands together and claps them, which breaks her out of trembling and surprises the Alumni. He tells her to calm down first and take time to figure out what she's going to cook. Furthermore, instead of focusing on what Kojirō is cooking, Sōma tells Megumi to make her own food. When she remembers watching her mother cook, Megumi confirms what she's going to make.
Back at the campsite, the Polar Star Dormitory residents are shocked after finding out Sōma and Megumi challenged Kojirō to a Shokugeki. In the basement, while Kojirō is waiting for his dish to finish cooking, the rest of the alumni are observing, and Hinako is tied in a chair again. Megumi has explained to Sōma what she's going make, he admits it's interesting. As she is happy to hear him, Megumi tells Sōma that the recipe requires a lot of prep work with different ingredients, so she's not certain that they can manage. However, Sōma tells Megumi he'll pour everything he got since he was holding the fort at Yukihira Diner, much to her delight. As she cuts the tomatoes, Megumi tells Sōma to prepare the other ingredients. Hinako (slipped through the ropes again) approaches Kojirō, and she tells him about the "dokoro" from "Restaurant" (shokujidokoro) and the "dokoro" from "Tadokoro" overlap. Angered from hearing this, he has her tied in a chair again and tells Donato to take her somewhere far away.
Megumi places the sliced tomatoes inside the stove, but she has forgotten to prepare the shoulder cut first. Fortunately, Sōma has finished doing the cutting and removed all the tendons. When he asks her for him to work on chicken liver or fatback, Megumi chooses the former. As they're cooking, Megumi asks Sōma if the mold is ready, and he responds that it is as he's getting the pate ready. Also, he'll be sautéing the vegetables in 12 seconds as she thanks him. Megumi sees how amazing Sōma is when he's delivering the ingredients to her. He's been helping her, but Megumi feels like she's able to cook several times faster than she'll be able to by herself. As the judges are observing, Fuyumi starts to question what is going on, and Donato explains that Sōma is staying several steps ahead of Megumi and providing support without impacting his own task. Hitoshi points out that Sōma never goes beyond what's necessary as he's monitoring Megumi very carefully to avoid getting in her way. While acknowledging his skills, Donato and Hitoshi check Sōma's file, revealing to them that he’s the only transfer student this year. As Gin informs the contestants to begin the finishing touches, both sides complete their dishes before time is up.
As the alumni begin judging, Kojirō's dish goes first to serve. When Megumi wonders how amazing it'll be, it is revealed to be Chou Farci, a regional dish from the Auvergne region of France. Hinako (now loose from the ropes again) is disappointed in how Kojirō can only make fancy dishes, which leads him to chop her on the head. When the judges (and even Hinako) taste his dish, they deem it as delicious. Gin savors it and thinks about how Kojirō went to France after graduation and opened his restaurant in Paris where he's known as the Légumes Magician.
When Hinako, Donato, and Hitoshi are satisfied with his dish, Kojirō asks Fuyumi how it tastes, and she responds that it was perfect once she wiped all of his memories of him, which leads him to say how unfortunate for her. Gin tells him that he wasn't expecting this and thought he would taste the specialty of his restaurant. However, Kojirō confirms that it's a joke in poor taste and his opponent is only a student. He asks if it would be cruel to serve his signature dish, and Donato and Hitoshi agree, which can crush his opponents and that they'll never cook again. Feeling unsatisfied about it, Gin calls out for Megumi to serve her dish. As she starts to worry about what the judges will say, Sōma calms Megumi down, so she shows them her dish. To the Alumni's surprise, it's revealed to be a terrine.
